Mid-January Optimization
Ventury » Devlog
Some optimizations and minor changes have been made.
- A proper implementation of a depth buffer, finalized and ready for use in any number of effects. It is rendered on odd-frames, and "drawn" at significantly reduced fidelity.
- An implementation of depth-based atmospheric bloom is present. Levels may have unique bloom colors, but default to one which lets the brilliant colors of a clear sky leak over the silhouettes of nearby characters and objects. Seen here is maximum opacity for the bloom to illustrate the effect.
- The camera is no longer fixed to the player character. Easing for the camera is used, making stairs and low dais less jittery when stepping onto them.
- A drop-shadow will appear beneath the player character when they are high enough above ground.
- A CPU-based trail is used instead of a GPU-driven solution.
- Made some fixes for certain cases involving the companion character and doors that resulted in softlocks.
- Resolved internal errors, creating mild performance gains from a lack of error reporting.
- Tweaks to the player character's state machine were made so that they can climb ladders from being immersed in water.
From glossydon:
Lately I've been apprised with a number of other things in my personal life, which have taken attention away from this project. I've wanted to put more time into it, though my focus had to drift away out of necessity. I'm going to continue working on the project, and hope to have more to share by February. Until then, an optimized version of the game is here to examine. I am committed to finishing what I started.
